Some people yearn for luxury holidays; only 5-star hotels and business class travel will do for them. However, this can be quite soulless and you often miss out on the real country itself. You are shielded in a manicured hotel, often with food that is quite unlike anything the local people have ever tasted.
Waiters on tap, and the doorman beating himself on the head if he doesn't get there in time to open the door for you. That is why many people prefer the freedom of a camping or caravanning holiday. They can just go down to their local dealership to have a look at the used holiday caravans, pick one they like the look of and Bob's your uncle!
Freedom to do exactly what you want and in your own time. Freedom to choose whichever road you want and end up in the town of your choice; freedom to change your plans at the last minute, or not even make any plans at all!
You can see some of the real country that you are visiting; you can visit the local supermarkets and farmers markets and eat as the local people eat. You can cook in the caravan or take your meals in a local restaurant or café.
It is no wonder that campervans and caravans are becoming so popular as this is the only type of holiday that offers such flexibility and freedom.
